Job description: The purpose of the BEST Summer Bridge program for student athletes is to facilitate the transition for new students into the university. The bridge experience encourages participants to think about themselves as members of the OSU community and to develop identities as OSU students.  In addition, BEST students learn the behaviors, habits, and expectations of higher education. The bridge experience provides a challenging learning environment in which student athletes receive a great deal of individual attention, study facilitation and mentoring.

This position is as a resident mentor for one session during the BEST Summer Bridge Program. Each session has two resident mentors who work in collaboration. Primary responsibilities include the following:  orient participants to expectations of the living community and their roles as student-athletes, build community in the residence hall for all participants, provide support and assistance for the program participants during their program and transition to OSU, check in with each participant daily, communicate regularly with the program supervisor, and attend all trainings and staff meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Be present in the residence hall every night beginning at 9:00 pm through breakfast
  • Develop supportive relationships with individual participants to create strong cohort community and address any issues that degrade that community
  • Provide support around personal, academic and transitional issues for the duration of the program
  • Educate participants about campus resources and opportunities in a way that encourages each student to advocate for themselves and their needs
  • Help coordinate participant move-in/move-out with Residence Hall/Conference Staff and the BEST program coordinator
  • Attend the welcome event, staff meetings, and ending celebration
  • Guide participants to meals for the first few days and eat with participants at intervals during the program (a dining card will be provided)
  • Participate in 10 hours of training (dates planned around the end of June), meetings, and preparation, and attend ending celebration

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in a leadership role
  • Ability to solve problems in complex situations and create a structured environment conducive to student learning.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to working with diverse groups of students, staff, and administrators
  • Commitment to upholding and modeling campus rules and program expectations
  • Good Academic Standing (GPA over 2.5)
  • Availability to work all hours needed including evening and weekend hours and weekly meetings

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with OSU residential programs
  • High degree of individual responsibility
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Current student athlete, previous BEST participant
  • Junior standing or higher  (Graduate Students are encouraged to apply)

Extra Information

  • Salary level:
    $9-$12, based on experience, and room and meal card
  • Approximate hours per weeks: 15-20 and evenings in residence hall
